2010 Loess Hills Amateur Wine Contest

The Western Iowa Grape Grower’s Association is proud to sponsor the 2010 Loess Hills Amateur Wine Contest on Saturday May 29, 210 hosted at Prairie Crossing Vineyard & Winery, 31506 Pioneer Trail; Treynor, Iowa in conjunction with Prairie Crossing’s 3 year anniversary event.

Amateur wine may be entered into any of the 14 judging categories.  Awards will be given for the winners of each of the categories.  In addition to the category awards, best red wine and best white wine of the competition will be awarded.  There will be a best of show award for overall competition and an award will be given for the best locally grown Midwest wine of the competition.

The entry cost for the Loess Hills Amateur Wine Contest is $5.00 per wine entry if pre-registered.  $7.00 per bottle day of the contest.  Entry forms must be received by noon May 22, 2010 for pre-registration or day or competition by 12:00 noon before judging begins.  If you have questions or need additional information, please call Charlie Caldwell at 712-566-2681 or email caldhome@aol.com.

2010 Loess Hills Winemaking 101

Western Iowa Grape Grower’s Association is sponsoring an Amateur Winemaking 101 Course on Saturday May 15th 2010 at 9:00 am hosted at Prairie Crossing Vineyard & Winery, 31506 Pioneer Trail; Treynor, Iowa.

The Winemaking 101 course will be geared towards beginning winemaking using local grape varieties and will cover necessary equipment, winemaking process, and resources to assist in winemaking.

The Winemaking 101 course is the first in a series of courses to introduce amateur winemakers to the joys of making wine using local grape varieties.  Later courses will follow with more advanced topics.

The course is limited to the first 30 registrants.  Pre-registration is advised.
